Exercise? Top Reasons Not To

Every day we hear studies giving us reasons why to exercise.  It helps with weight and fat loss as well as prevention of obesity, heart disease, and diabetes to name a few.  So all of us know that exercise is good for us and why we should do it.  I’ve never seen a study telling us why not to exercise yet we all have reasons why we don’t.  These are all barriers that we have to overcome.  A few are: not enough time, too busy with work, activities, or kids and their activities, I don’t know what to do, it’s boring, I’m afraid that I might hurt myself, and so on.  We might want to begin exercising but don’t know where to start or need help getting started.  Maybe we start but don’t stick to it.  Usually our goals are well-intentioned but are too lofty and longer term than short term goals. Now perfection is ideally great, but unrealistic.  Life happens.  It comes down to consistency and persistency.  If you had a lazy day yesterday okay, today is a new day with a clean slate.  We tend to be too harsh on ourselves so give yourself some slack.  Stay focused on where you want to go.  Now let’s address those barriers.

  • Not enough time – I have 3 young kids and a growing business.  Life is busy.  I have to be even more organized which is not my best attribute.  If our time to exercise is flexible and life is busy, exercise usually falls to the end of the day when we are exhausted and it doesn’t happen.  That is why exercise time needs to be scheduled.  It seems that most things are appointment oriented so why not have an appointment time for your workout.  All of our programs are schedule based so that you can plan for it and work it into your schedule.
  • I don’t know what to do – This one is completely understandable.  Most never went to school to learn about how to exercise or what to do.  Maybe we read an article or saw a video.  Is that what our body needs?  Is it appropriate for my goals?  Am I doing it correctly?  That’s why our programs are directed by personal trainers who are required to go through continuing education and be certified.  They have the expertise to help.
  • It’s boring – If you are getting in and exercising, great job!  If you keep doing the same exercises the same way every time you’re going to get bored.  Also, you won’t get the results you’re looking for either.  Our body, in its infinite wisdom, adapts to the stress that we place on it.  So if you keep doing the same things you won’t get all of the benefits that you are looking for.  If you’re bored, it’s also reasonable to think that you might not know exactly what to do.  Once again a personal trainer can greatly help to keep your workouts varied and introduce you to new exercises.  You might be surprised at what you are capable of.
  • I might get hurt or I’m not sure if I’m doing it correctly – This is where it can get scary for some.  Being injured is never any fun and can lead to discouragement abandoning your program.  As a physical therapist, I’ve treated many injuries that occurred because someone was using improper form.  Sometimes it can happen because of a one-time incident but usually occurs over time.  Your body will be able to compensate for some time but eventually will have enough leading to pain and dysfunction.

Evolution at Sports and Physical Therapy Center has developed strategies to address the above barriers. We have convenient class times which will fit into your schedules whether before or after work or activities during the week and on the weekend even in the middle of the day.  At Evolution, we have incorporated the knowledge of graduate level physical therapists and certified personal trainers in program design.  With this approach you get the best of it all, addressing your fitness goals and needs along with proper mechanics and injury prevention.  Evolution offers small group training with an 8 to 1 ratio or less.  The lower numbers ensure that you will get the attention you deserve while making sure that your form and mechanics are proper to get the most out of the program.  Our programs also change daily to give you variety which will address any boredom that you may have had in the past.  Don’t fear though, because it is directed by a personal trainer or physical therapist they will make sure that you are doing things properly.  That way you know what to do and how to do it to avoid injury.  Clients are assessed every 3 months by a physical therapist to evaluate their progress and address any needs that they have.  Those directing the classes are more than happy to answer any questions or concerns you have too.  If you want something more private we also offer one on one personal training.  Confront the barriers that are holding you back from achieving your goals and reaching your full potential.  Exercise is important and can be overwhelming because we are inundated with so much information.  Let Evolution help you reach those goals.  Contact us at 636-938-4065 to set up a free assessment.  You can even try two complimentary classes!  But remember that the classes are limited to 8 participants in order to receive the attention you deserve, so call today!
